Autosports Engineering Outlaw Catch Can — In Car

A 5-quart, four-stage baffled catch can built for drag racing. Sized to mount in the rear of the car or the passenger compartment and vent atmospherically toward the rear.

Why capacity matters

A catch can's job isn't only collecting oil — it's keeping crankcase pressure down. Race engines run larger ring gaps, which means more blowby and rising crankcase pressure. That pressure works against the rings sealing, and rings that don't seal push more oil past them and more smoke out the exhaust. Greater can volume gives that pressure somewhere to go.

Four separation stages

  • Stage 1 — Perforated entry plate. Vapor enters the inlet and immediately meets a fully perforated plate beneath the cap, breaking up the incoming charge before it reaches the body.
  • Stage 2 — Drain ramp. Oil and residue land on an angled ramp and run down through slotted holes into the collection volume, so caught mist becomes liquid in the bottom of the can instead of re-entering the airflow.
  • Stage 3 — Stainless wool coalescing section. Positioned at the highest point in the can, so all liquid has already settled below it and the wool only ever sees vapor. Fine mist coalesces into droplets heavy enough to fall back.
  • Stage 4 — Dual-stage perforation. A second slotted plate with smaller holes forms the final stage before the outlet.

The exit is chambered separately and the top of the perforated exit tube is solid, so there is no path from inlet to outlet that bypasses the sequence. Only hot vapor leaves the can.

Specifications

  • Capacity: 5 quarts
  • Inlet and outlet: -16 AN, -20 AN, or 1.5″ hose
  • Ball valve drain at base
  • Precision laser cut and bent sheet metal, TIG welded
  • Mounting brackets included
  • Atmospherically vented

Draining

Run a single hole in the floor pan with a rubber grommet, drop a hose through, crack the ball valve, and drain into a pan while the car is on jacks.
